Slots in Charlottetown, VLTs in Summerside
Charlottetown has more than 150 slots, a mix of classic reel machines and video slots. They switch on at 11 am every day. From Sunday to Wednesday they run until 1 am, and until 2 am on Thursday, Friday and Saturday.
Summerside works a little differently. Its gaming floor is VLTs only, and Red Shores does not say how many there are. A VLT is a video lottery terminal, a screen game run for the lottery. The floor opens at 11 am and closes at 11 pm Sunday through Thursday, or 1 am on Friday and Saturday. Holiday hours are not posted for either hall, so phone the hall before a holiday.
Blackjack, baccarat and the dealer's hand
Charlottetown keeps its card games in a separate room, the Table Games room, with blackjack, baccarat and Ultimate Texas Hold'em. That last one borrows its hands from poker, but you play against the dealer's hand, not the other people at the table. Summerside has no tables at all.
On Friday, Saturday and Sunday the cards start at 12 noon. Monday to Thursday, they start at 4 pm. Every table runs until close, and Red Shores does not post a clock time for that close. Neither the number of tables nor the minimum bets is published. If you want a late hand, ask on the floor rather than count on a set hour.
Poker and roulette at the end of the week
Poker deals from 6 pm on Thursday and Friday and from 4 pm on Saturday. Roulette spins from 6 pm on Thursday, Friday and Saturday only. Both run until close, and that close is not posted. So if either game is the plan, aim for the end of the week. Sunday to Wednesday has no poker and no roulette in Charlottetown, and Summerside offers neither on any night.
Betting on races, live and on screen
Both halls sit beside old tracks. Charlottetown Driving Park dates from 1888. Summerside Raceway opened in 1886, and it is thought to be the oldest horse track in Canada to race without a break. Both host live harness racing. At the Driving Park the betting is pari-mutuel: every bet goes into one pool, which is shared out among the winning tickets.
Races from other tracks are shown and taken for bets in the Simulcast Theatre in Charlottetown, open daily from 11 am until midnight. In Summerside, simulcast betting keeps the floor hours: 11 am to 11 pm Sunday through Thursday, 11 am to 1 am Friday and Saturday. Race dates sit on the Red Shores racing page, so check there before you head out for a live card.
